The Norwegian Public Road Administration (NPRA) has launched the NVDB TN-ITS Export API, a public service providing continuous updates on road attribute changes from the Norwegian National Road Database (NVDB, or Nasjonal vegdatabank).

The service delivers daily incremental updates for four key road attributes: speed limits, road names, road numbers, and height restrictions. It also supports snapshots, offering aggregated updates over longer periods, such as a week or a month.

This launch marks a significant step in Norway’s implementation of the EU ITS Directive and the Real-Time Traffic Information Regulation (EU 2022/670). The service adheres to the European TN-ITS standard (CEN/TS 17268), enabling harmonized, reliable, and standardized sharing of road data across Europe.

TN-ITS is the reference data exchange standard for updates to static map-related attributes, such as speed limits, as outlined in the RTTI Regulation (EU 2022/670). It is fully compatible with map production and maintenance processes used by leading service providers. Stemming from the EU NAPCORE project the coordinated framework for national access points to mobility data across Europe TN-ITS is included in the DATEX II suite of traffic data standards as Part 14 (publication pending). The NPRA has been a founding member of ERTICO’s TN-ITS Multistakeholder Innovation Platform, established in 2013. The platform brings together road authorities and service providers, the latter representing over 90% of the global digital map industry.

The newly available API service provides strong support for data users and software developers, offering:

  • Daily updates and monthly snapshots with an easy download function
  • A map viewer for visualizing road objects
  • XML data in TN-ITS format via an open REST API no login required

The NPRA’s TN-ITS service represents a key advancement in ensuring that trusted updates to road data reach navigation, ADAS and automated driving systems. It will enhance safe and efficient road use for Norwegian citizens, and for tourists venturing to Northern Europe!

TN-ITS contributes to the NAPCORE project by providing its knowledge and expertise in road
data sharing through the specification and further elaboration of the TN-ITS standard.
