The TN-ITS General Assembly took place in Brussels on December 19, 2024, bringing together members and stakeholders to review the year’s progress and define the platform’s direction for 2025. This year’s meeting highlighted milestones, from advancing data-sharing standards to laying the groundwork for broader member engagement and enhanced applications.
Key Achievements in 2024
Christian Kleine, TN-ITS President, began the assembly by presenting an overview of the platform’s achievements. A standout success was the formal integration of TN-ITS into the DATEX II framework, which was completed under NAPCORE. This merger marked TN-ITS as Part 14 of DATEX II standards, creating a unified approach to road and traffic information and further embedding TN-ITS in the European mobility ecosystem.
The platform also focused on expanding its role in data-sharing applications. Initiatives like the development of bike-specific data solutions are paving the way for TN-ITS to support urban mobility and infrastructure planning. Through collaboration with public authorities and private stakeholders, TN-ITS achieved significant progress in integrating its tools into metropolitan areas and expanding its influence on sustainable mobility solutions, such as optimized CO2 routing.
Additionally, TN-ITS played a prominent role at key industry events, including the World ITS Congress in Dubai, the POLIS 2024 Conference in Karlsruhe, and the DATEX II User Forum in Bucharest. These events helped increase the platform’s visibility and fostered connections with international stakeholders.
Advancing Data Quality and Member Engagement
Enhancing the quality, accuracy, and security of shared data remained a central theme in 2024. Updates to the TN-ITS strategy, outlined by Frank Daems, emphasized ongoing efforts to refine tools for data correctness and generation. These improvements aim to establish robust feedback mechanisms, ensuring that data provided through TN-ITS services meets the high standards required for effective use in traffic management systems.
Engaging member states and private road operators also featured prominently in TN-ITS’s 2024 agenda. Efforts included targeted surveys to assess implementation gaps and the creation of reference architectures to support member adoption of TN-ITS standards. Building on these activities, TN-ITS is preparing for further outreach initiatives in 2025, including workshops and city-level roadshows to drive adoption across Europe.
Shaping the Future of Applications
The assembly also highlighted the importance of expanding the scope of TN-ITS applications. A focus on developing new technical capabilities will enable the platform to support diverse needs, including Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) and digital twin mapping for urban areas. These innovations align closely with European Green Deal objectives, providing tools for emissions optimization and better integration of alternative fuel infrastructure.
Looking forward, TN-ITS aims to extend its coverage to additional member states and private road operators while enhancing data sharing for urban vehicle access regulations and geofencing applications. These developments reflect the platform’s growing commitment to supporting a broad range of mobility solutions through standardized and harmonized data.
Recognizing Contributions and Planning for 2025
The General Assembly concluded with the annual TN-ITS Awards Ceremony. Recognizing contributions to the platform’s success, the yearly awards were presented to Juan Manuel Anera (HERE Technologies), Richard Rek (CEDA Maps) and Rodolfo da Silva (KIOS Research and Innovation), all of whom demonstrated outstanding commitment to advancing TN-ITS objectives. The awards served as a celebration of the collaborative spirit that has been integral to TN-ITS’s growth over the past year.
In addition, Matthias Mersch (Tom Tom), was elected as the next TN-ITS vice president, taking over for Sukhdev Phull.
Looking ahead to 2025, TN-ITS plans to focus on expanding its geographic reach, refining its data quality frameworks, and fostering deeper collaboration within the NAPCORE ecosystem. With projects like TISGRADE and NAPCORE X in development, the platform is well-positioned to continue its work in improving road safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
As 2024 came to a close, TN-ITS reflects on a year of significant progress and prepares to build on this foundation in the coming year. With a clear vision and the support of its dedicated members, the platform is set to make meaningful contributions to the future of intelligent transport systems.
