The ITS Belgium Congress 2024, Belgium’s leading smart mobility event, took place on Thursday, 26 September. It brought together industry leaders, innovators, experts and policymakers to discuss practical ways to improve transportation systems. Opening remarks from Peter Van der Perre, Director of ITS.be, and Filip Boelaert, Secretary-general of the Flemish Department for Mobility and Public Works, set the tone for a day focused on addressing current challenges like sustainability, the electro-mobility transition, and shared mobility.

Frank Daems, TN-ITS coordinator, presented during the Knowledge Sharing Session on 5G, AI, and Data Spaces, on the importance of well-governed data spaces in supporting road safety and efficiency. He highlighted how TN-ITS enables speed limit and map data to be shared quickly and accurately, making it easier for road authorities and map makers to work together. This helps ensure that roads are safer, with up-to-date information that improves navigation and compliance with traffic regulations.

ERTICO’s TN-ITS innovation platform has been working on streamlining the process of sharing road data since 2013, and this session underscored how critical standardized data exchange is to managing modern mobility. The session also discussed how data governance, security, and trust are crucial as mobility systems become more interconnected, particularly with the adoption of 5G and AI technologies.

Reinoud Delaere from HERE Technologies and Nele Dedene from Vlaamse Overheid further expanded on this during the Multimodal Mobility Management Innovations session, demonstrating how TN-ITS connects road authorities with map makers to provide fresh data on road attributes like speed limits and traffic signs, ultimately making roads safer and travel more efficient.

The TN-ITS multistakeholder platform remains committed to expanding its services across Europe, aligning with NAPCORE’s goals to improve the use of road data and support safer, more efficient transportation systems.

Throughout the event, it became clear that the future of mobility is a complex, interconnected puzzle, and that Connected Intelligent Transport Systems are here to stay. The solutions lie in collaboration, data sharing, and technology innovations, all underpinned by a framework of trust and standardization

Looking ahead, TN-ITS continues its contribution to a connected and sustainable mobility future. Through ongoing collaborations with key stakeholders, the organization continues to align with NAPCORE‘s objectives to promote data standardization and foster cross-border mobility solutions.
